Melanotan 2 Melanotan 2 is a synthetic analog of the naturally occurring melanocortin peptide stimulating hormone. It stimulates the production of melanin which already exists naturally in the body without the need for exposure to the sun although the effects of the peptide are significantly magnified with even very minimal exposure to the sun. Melanin is the pigment that makes your skin appear tanned. Melanotan 2 has been dubbed the "barbie drug" because it can a make person darker, thinner and also has the added benefit of an increased libido. Melanotan 2 should not be confused with its predecessor, Melanotan 1 (also called Afamelanotide), which was originally developed at the University of Arizona as a possible treatment for minor skin diseases and the possibility of being a skin cancer preventative agent. Melanotan 1 does not have the same effect on sexual arousal as does Melanotan 2. MT 1 is a straight full length peptide while MT2 is a shortened, circular version of the afamelanotide peptide. Neither Melanotan 1 or Melanotan 2 has been approved for use by the FDA and are currently only allowed to be used for clinical trials. Initial clinical trials of Melanotan show that it has potential and shows promise as a protective agent against harmful UV rays from sun exposure for people with fair skin who normally burn when exposed to direct sunlight. In addition to darker skin that is more resistant to the penetration of UV rays, Melanotan 2 also has the added benefit of increased libido and is being considered for development as a drug to treat sexual dysfunction. On May 5 2010, the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA - Agenzia Italiana del Farmaco) approved Melanotan I as a medication for those suffering from erythropoietic protoporphyria. A common symptom of the disease is very painful burning and itching from photo sensitivity. The drug can be effective to induce photoprotective dermal eumelanin pigmentation which relieves painful symptoms. Melanotan provides and effective solution for this disease which has no cure and limited treatment options which results in many individuals living in constant pain. Other governmental agencies like the FDA and Health Canada may or may not soon follow suit in approving the drug. It is unclear what further evidence is needed to satisfy the concerns of government on drug safety issues. An argument can be made that agencies are reluctant to approve drugs whose primary benefits are mostly geared towards cosmetic usage rather than the treatment of medical conditions. |
